Hot Chocolate Plus... Frozen Whipped Cream!

The marketing team behind Dunkin' Donuts' Turbo Hot chocolate are geniuses! I saw a few advertisements, a few more commercials, and spent the next full week thinking of hot chocolate spiked with espresso only to end up swapping my morning coffee for hot chocolate with a turbo shot this past Thursday AND Friday. ...YUM!

For caffeine fiends like me, hot chocolate often seems like a joke of a beverage choice. All chocolate, no buzz? I'll take a large coffee with a splash of milk instead.

Hot chocolate that has been spruced up with a shot of espresso, a fistful of mini marshmallows or a dollop of whipped cream is much more desirable that plain old Swiss Miss... but I still usually opt for coffee. That is, until Dunkin' Donuts got into my head and made me crave hot chocolate:

Hot chocolate with espresso on my way to work, and hot chocolate with frozen whipped cream on a lazy Sunday...

I first noticed frozen whipped cream hearts when they popped up on Pinterest a week or two ago. The concept is incredibly simple. Whip up some heavy whipping cream with sugar and vanilla (I used vanilla-scented sugar!), spread it out in a pie tin or something similar, freeze for a few hours, and cut out shapes with a cookie cutter. No recipe, no fuss! You could also spoon small dollops on a parchment paper.

I thought I would be extra clever and use alphabet-shaped cookie cutters to spell out my name in a cup of hot chocolate, but it turns out frozen whipped cream is not as durable as cookie dough and it crumbled. Instead, I used a sharp knife to cut out two B-shaped blocks of frozen whipped cream — Baker Beth! ...And together they sort of look like a butterfly!
